Description
Overview of the medicine
Dilyt 15 mg syrup contains Dicyclomine Hydrochloride, an antispasmodic agent used to relieve smooth muscle spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, often associated with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional bowel disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 10-20 mg (approx. 3.3-6.6 ml) three to four times a day. May be increased to 40 mg (approx. 13.3 ml) three to four times a day if needed. For 15mg/5ml strength, typically 5-10 ml (15-30 mg) three to four times daily.
Elderly
Start with lower doses and titrate based on response and tolerability due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; consider reduced dosage due to potential for accumulation.
How to Take
Oral, usually taken before meals. Can be taken with food if stomach upset occurs.
Mechanism of Action
Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent that blocks the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors on smooth muscles, glands, and the central nervous system. This causes relaxation of smooth muscles, especially in the GI tract, and reduces spasm and pain.
