Description
Overview of the medicine
Dobesil-500-mg-capsule contains Calcium Dobesilate, a vasoprotective agent used to treat microangiopathies, particularly diabetic retinopathy, and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 500-1000 mg daily, divided into 1-2 doses, with or after meals. Duration of treatment depends on the condition.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment requiring dialysis, a reduced dose may be necessary. Use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Dobesilate acts primarily by normalizing capillary permeability and resistance. It reduces increased vascular permeability, improves microcirculation, and decreases blood viscosity and platelet aggregation. It also strengthens capillary walls and improves lymphatic drainage.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically observed after several weeks of continuous treatment.
Excretion
Mainly renal (about 50% unchanged) and fecal (about 50%) within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 5 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration reached within 6 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism, mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Calcium Dobesilate or any excipients.
- Patients with pre-existing severe renal failure requiring dialysis (use with caution, dose adjustment may be needed).
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants
Theoretical risk of increased bleeding, monitor carefully.
Other Vasoprotectives
No significant known interactions.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not store above 30°C.
Overdose
Limited data on human overdose. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; caution is advised during breastfeeding.
