Description
Overview of the medicine
Duric 100 mg Tablet contains Furosemide, a potent loop diuretic, used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. It is also used to treat high blood pressure.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose: 20-80 mg once daily. May be increased by 20-40 mg increments every 6-8 hours until desired effect. Maintenance dose: 20-400 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses. For hypertension, initial 20 mg twice daily, adjusted based on response.
Elderly
Lower initial doses recommended (e.g., 20 mg once daily) and titrate carefully.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. Maximum daily dose may be limited in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take Duric 100 mg tablet orally, with or without food, usually once or twice daily as directed by your doctor. It is often taken in the morning to avoid nighttime urination. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Furosemide acts on the ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidney to inhibit the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions. This leads to increased excretion of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, resulting in diuresis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 30-60 minutes; IV: 5 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion (60-80% unchanged drug); some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 0.5-2 hours (increased in renal impairment).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is variable (40-70%).
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism (glucuronidation); some undergoes renal metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Anuria (absence of urine production)
- Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulfonamides
- Severe electrolyte depletion
- Hepatic coma or pre-coma
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May reduce the diuretic and antihypertensive effects of furosemide.
Digoxin
Increased risk of digoxin toxicity due to hypokalemia.
Lithium
Reduced renal clearance of lithium, leading to increased lithium levels and toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of hypokalemia.
Aminoglycoside antibiotics
Increased risk of ototoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances (e.g., hypokalemia, hyponatremia), hypotension, and cardiovascular collapse. Treatment involves correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances and supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Furosemide should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in breast milk and may inhibit lactation. Use with caution in nursing mothers.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium) regularly
- Kidney function tests (BUN, creatinine)
- Blood pressure and fluid balance monitoring
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on symptoms of hypokalemia and advise on potassium-rich diet or supplementation if necessary.
- Monitor renal function and electrolytes closely, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing renal impairment.
- Advise patients to report any hearing changes immediately.
Patient Guidelines
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
- Report any signs of severe fluid or electrolyte loss, such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, muscle cramps, or weakness.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure as furosemide may increase photosensitivity.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
