How to Take
Oral tablets should be swallowed whole with water, not crushed or chewed. Do not take with milk or antacids within one hour.
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate peristalsis and promote fluid and electrolyte accumulation in the colon, leading to bowel evacuation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours (oral); 15-60 minutes (rectal).
Excretion
Primarily through feces, some via urine as glucuronides.
Half life
Unknown due to minimal systemic absorption; for active metabolite (BHPM) ~16 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption. Primarily acts locally in the colon.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by intestinal and bacterial enzymes to its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM).
