Overview of the medicine
Econazole Nitrate 1% Cream is a topical antifungal medication used to treat various fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete's foot, jock itch, and cutaneous candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply thinly to the affected areas and surrounding skin twice daily, morning and evening, for 2 to 4 weeks, or as directed by a physician. Continue treatment for at least two weeks after the disappearance of symptoms to prevent recurrence.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before application. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin and gently rub it in. Wash hands immediately after use, unless hands are the treated area.
Mechanism of Action
Econazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to structural damage and increased permeability of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in leakage of cellular contents and eventual fungal cell death.

Onset
Symptomatic improvement often within 2-3 days, but full course completion is necessary.
Excretion
Mainly through desquamation of skin; negligible systemic excretion.
Half life
Not clinically significant for topical use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application; primarily remains in the stratum corneum.

Minimal metabolism in the skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Although systemic absorption is minimal, caution should be exercised in patients on oral anticoagulants like warfarin, as isolated cases of increased anticoagulant effect have been reported with topical econazole.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application. If accidentally ingested, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of accidental ingestion may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, after consulting a doctor. Minimal absorption suggests low risk, but caution is advised. Consult a doctor before use during breastfeeding.
