Description
Overview of the medicine
Ed-Fex 120 mg Tablet is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps reduce symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat or nose, and itchy, watery eyes, as well as skin itching and rashes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 120 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily (if prescribed in other strengths).
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required in elderly patients, but caution is advised in those with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For moderate to severe renal impairment, a lower starting dose (e.g., 60 mg once daily) may be considered, consult physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Do not take with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours of taking Ed-Fex.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It binds to H1 receptors in various tissues, including the respiratory tract and skin, preventing histamine from exerting its effects, thereby reducing allergic symptoms without causing significant sedation due to its limited ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 10%) as unchanged drug.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any components of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase plasma levels of fexofenadine. Monitor for increased side effects.
Aluminum- or Magnesium-containing Antacids
May decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and usual measures to remove unabsorbed drug from the gastrointestinal tract may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether fexofenadine is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
