Description
Overview of the medicine
Edin 250 mg Capsule contains Cefradine, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg - 1 g every 12 hours, depending on infection severity. Max 4 g/day.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required: e.g., CrCl 20-50 ml/min: 250-500 mg every 8-12 hours; CrCl < 5 ml/min: 250 mg every 12-24 hours.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefradine is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours (therapeutic concentrations)
Excretion
Mainly by renal excretion (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 0.5-1.5 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefradine or other cephalosporins
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Metformin
Cephalexin (a similar cephalosporin) has been reported to interact with metformin, potentially increasing metformin levels. Monitor blood glucose.
Probenecid
May increase cefradine plasma concentrations by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with concomitant use.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea. Management is supportive and symptomatic; hemodialysis may be helpful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
