Description
Overview of the medicine
Edruson 5 mg Tablet contains Edrusin Hydrochloride, an alpha-1 adrenoceptor blocker used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It helps relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder, improving urine flow, and also relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For BPH: Initially 1 mg once daily, adjusted to 2 mg, 5 mg, or up to 10 mg once daily based on response. For hypertension: Initially 1 mg once daily, adjusted to 2 mg, 5 mg, or up to 10 mg once daily based on response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution should be exercised due to increased sensitivity and potential for orthostatic hypotension.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is typically necessary in patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised.
How to Take
Edruson tablets should be taken orally once daily, either in the morning or evening. It can be taken with or without food. To minimize the potential for postural hypotension, it is often recommended to take the first dose at bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Edrusin selectively blocks alpha-1 adrenoceptors in the prostate, bladder neck, and blood vessels. This blockade causes relaxation of the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, leading to improved urine flow in BPH. In blood vessels, it causes vasodilation, which reduces peripheral vascular resistance and lowers blood pressure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour for blood pressure lowering, symptomatic improvement in BPH typically seen within 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the feces (60-70%) as metabolites, with a small portion excreted in the urine (10-15%).
Half life
Approximately 12-16 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via O-demethylation and hydroxylation, followed by glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Edrusin or other quinazoline derivatives (e.g., prazosin, terazosin)
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic impairment (for some alpha-blockers)
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May increase the risk of first-dose postural hypotension.
Other Antihypertensive Agents
Increased risk of hypotension when co-administered with other antihypertensive medications.
PDE5 Inhibitors (e.g., Sildenafil, Tadalafil)
Concomitant use may lead to additive hypotensive effects and symptomatic hypotension. Administer with caution and monitor blood pressure.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of Edruson may result in profound hypotension. Management should include supportive care, placing the patient in a supine position with legs elevated, and administering intravenous fluids if necessary. Vasopressors may be used if hypotension persists.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Edruson should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Edrusin is excreted in human milk, therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have demonstrated Edrusin's efficacy in significantly reducing BPH symptoms (e.g., improved urinary flow rates, reduced nocturia) and lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients. The safety profile was consistent with other alpha-1 blockers.
Lab Monitoring
- Blood pressure monitoring (especially at initiation of therapy and dose titration)
- Liver function tests (periodically, if clinically indicated)
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients thoroughly about the first-dose effect and orthostatic hypotension, advising them to take the first dose at bedtime and to rise slowly.
- Monitor blood pressure regularly, especially during dose titration.
- Consider potential interactions with PDE5 inhibitors and other antihypertensives.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Edruson exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Be aware of the 'first-dose effect', which may cause dizziness or fainting; take the first dose at bedtime.
- Avoid sudden changes in posture, especially when getting up from a sitting or lying position.
- Report any prolonged or painful erection immediately to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose of Edruson is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Edruson may cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially at the start of treatment or when the dose is increased. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate machinery until the effects of the medication are known.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.
- Limit alcohol consumption as it may exacerbate hypotensive effects.
- Stay hydrated, especially in warm weather.
