Efaxim is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required for creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Efaxim inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (approximately 50% unchanged in urine), and some via bile.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 40-50%). Food may delay absorption but not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins
- History of severe allergic reaction to penicillin

Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Oral Contraceptives
May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives (rare).

Gastric lavage, symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not substantially effective.
