Description
Overview of the medicine
Electrosal is an Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) formulation used to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration, primarily caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. It helps to prevent and treat dehydration.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dissolve one sachet in 500 ml of pure drinking water. Drink as much as the patient wants or can take, usually 1 glass (250 ml) after each loose stool. Continue for 24 hours or until diarrhea stops.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor closely for electrolyte imbalance.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment, consult a doctor as electrolyte imbalance may occur.
How to Take
Mix the entire contents of one sachet in 500 ml (approx. 2 glasses) of cool, boiled, or purified drinking water. Stir until completely dissolved. Do not add sugar or other substances. Consume immediately after preparation.
Mechanism of Action
Electrosal works by providing essential salts (sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate) and glucose. Glucose facilitates the absorption of sodium and water in the small intestine, helping to restore fluid and electrolyte balance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes of ingestion
Excretion
Primarily via urine, sweat, and feces, maintaining physiological balance.
Half life
Not directly applicable for electrolytes; effects are systemic and rapid.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract due to glucose-mediated sodium-water co-transport.
Metabolism
Individual components are metabolized or utilized as per their physiological roles.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids
- Patients with glucose malabsorption
- Severe vomiting preventing oral intake
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- Anuria (absence of urine formation)
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May affect electrolyte balance, monitor serum electrolytes.
Medicines altering renal function
May impact electrolyte excretion.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare when prepared correctly and taken orally. Excessive intake in individuals with impaired renal function or incorrect preparation (too concentrated) may lead to hypernatremia or hyperkalemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and recommended during pregnancy and lactation for treating dehydration. No known adverse effects.
