Overview of the medicine
Apixaban is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5 mg twice daily, unless specific criteria are met for dose reduction.
Elderly
May require dose reduction based on age, weight, and renal function.
Renal_impairment
2.5 mg twice daily if at least two of the following criteria are met: age ≥80 years, body weight ≤60 kg, or serum creatinine ≥1.5 mg/dL.
How to Take
Oral administration, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Selectively inhibits free and clot-bound factor Xa, as well as prothrombinase activity.

Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Renal and fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed, bioavailability is approximately 50%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by CYP3A4/5.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light.
Overdose
There is no specific antidote. General supportive measures should be implemented. Activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use with caution, benefits should outweigh risks. Lactation: Not recommended due to potential risk to the infant.
