Description
Overview of the medicine
Elmin 400 mg Chewable Tablet contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most common intestinal worm infections: 400 mg as a single dose. For neurocysticercosis/echinococcosis: 400 mg twice daily for 8-30 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but use with caution in those with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment needed as renal excretion is minimal.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed or crushed and swallowed with water, preferably with a fatty meal to enhance absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to beta-tubulin, inhibiting microtubule formation in intestinal and other helminthic cells. This impairs glucose uptake, leading to glycogen depletion and ultimately the death of the parasite.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies depending on the infection, but clinical effects typically observed within days.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via bile, with a small amount excreted in urine as metabolites.
Half life
Primary active metabolite (albendazole sulfoxide) has a half-life of 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but absorption is increased with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, and then to other inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the formulation
- •Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
