Description
Overview of the medicine
Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by acute diarrhea (including cholera). It replaces fluids and electrolytes lost due to diarrhea or vomiting.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild to moderate dehydration: 200-400 ml after each loose stool. For severe dehydration, follow doctor's advice.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor closely for fluid overload if cardiovascular issues exist.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; consult a doctor.
How to Take
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in the specified amount of clean drinking water (e.g., 500 ml or 1 liter) as per instructions. Stir well until dissolved. Drink slowly.
Mechanism of Action
ORS works by utilizing the glucose-sodium co-transport system in the small intestine, which facilitates the absorption of sodium and water. This helps to restore fluid and electrolyte balance in dehydrated patients.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Fluid and electrolyte balance begins to improve shortly after administration (within 1-2 hours).
Excretion
Excess water and electrolytes are excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not directly applicable as it's a rehydration solution; components are metabolized/excreted as part of normal physiological processes.
Absorption
Water, sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate, and glucose are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized to energy; electrolytes are absorbed and utilized in normal body functions.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction
- Severe vomiting preventing oral intake
- Glucose malabsorption
- Unconsciousness or severely impaired consciousness
- Paralytic ileus
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May alter electrolyte balance; monitor carefully.
Drugs for cardiac conditions
Use with caution if electrolyte imbalances are a concern; monitor levels.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture. Keep out of reach of children. The prepared solution should be kept refrigerated and used within 24 hours.
Overdose
Overdose is rare with proper use. Excessive intake without dehydration, especially in individuals with impaired renal function, can lead to hypernatremia (high sodium levels) or fluid overload. Management involves discontinuing ORS and correcting electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
ORS is considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation. It helps to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance, which is crucial for both mother and baby.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials and widespread use since the 1970s have established ORS as a highly effective and safe treatment for dehydration due to diarrhea.
Lab Monitoring
- Not routinely required for typical use. In severe or prolonged cases, or in patients with underlying conditions, monitor serum electrolytes, renal function.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper mixing technique and use of clean water.
- Advise patients to continue breastfeeding for infants during ORS therapy.
- Educate on danger signs of dehydration requiring immediate medical attention.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use clean, boiled, and cooled water for mixing.
- Discard any unused solution after 24 hours.
- Do not add extra sugar or other ingredients to the solution.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is taken as needed to treat dehydration. There is no 'missed dose' as such. Continue administration as long as dehydration persists or as advised by a healthcare professional.
Driving Precautions
None known. ORS is unlikely to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further infections.
- Continue feeding infants and young children during diarrhea.
- Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
