Description
Overview of the medicine
Eraxis (anidulafungin) is an echinocandin antifungal medicine used to treat severe fungal infections, including invasive candidiasis and esophageal candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Invasive Candidiasis: 200 mg loading dose on Day 1, followed by 100 mg daily. Esophageal Candidiasis: 50 mg loading dose on Day 1, followed by 50 mg daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
Eraxis should be administered as a single intravenous infusion over 3 hours. It must not be administered as a bolus injection. Reconstitute the vial with Sterile Water for Injection, then further dilute in 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% dextrose solution.
Mechanism of Action
Anidulafungin inhibits 1,3-β-D-glucan synthase, an enzyme critical for the synthesis of 1,3-β-D-glucan, a major component of the fungal cell wall. This leads to osmotic instability and fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapidly achieves steady-state concentrations after loading dose.
Excretion
Primarily fecal excretion (approx. 30%), with minimal renal excretion (<1%).
Half life
Approximately 24-26 hours.
Absorption
Intravenous administration provides 100% bioavailability.
Metabolism
Undergoes slow chemical degradation to inactive metabolites; not a substrate, inducer, or inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to anidulafungin or any other echinocandin.
Drug Interactions
Cyclosporine
Co-administration with cyclosporine may increase anidulafungin exposure, but dose adjustment is generally not required.
Storage
Store intact vials refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Reconstituted and diluted solutions have specific stability guidelines.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, there is limited clinical experience. Supportive measures should be initiated as appropriate. Anidulafungin is not dialyzable.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether anidulafungin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
