Description
Overview of the medicine
Erode 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic medication containing Erythromycin, used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically not used for adults in suspension form; adult dosage usually 250-500 mg every 6 hours or 500-1000 mg every 12 hours (tablets/capsules). Pediatric dosage is commonly 30-50 mg/kg/day divided in 2-4 doses.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required for mild to moderate renal impairment; use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, usually 2-4 times daily. Can be taken with or without food, but food may reduce gastrointestinal upset. Shake well before each use. Use a calibrated measuring device.
Mechanism of Action
Erythromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking the translocation of peptides. This leads to a bacteriostatic effect, preventing bacterial growth and replication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly biliary excretion, with a small amount excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, but absorption is variable and affected by food. Ester forms (e.g., stearate, ethylsuccinate) improve absorption.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, via CYP3A4 system.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
- Concomitant use with terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine, dihydroergotamine due to risk of serious arrhythmias
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect, leading to bleeding.
Theophylline
Increased serum levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Statins (e.g., Simvastatin)
Increased risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis.
Terfenadine/Astemizole/Cisapride/Pimozide
Increased risk of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (QT prolongation). Concomitant use is contraindicated.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard unused portion after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves supportive care and gastric lavage if ingested recently. Hemodialysis is not effective.
