Overview of the medicine
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity of infection.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but with caution due to potential renal/hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment usually needed for mild-moderate impairment; caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food, but food may reduce GI upset.
Mechanism of Action
Binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking the polypeptide exit tunnel.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolides
- •Concurrent use with astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, pimozide, or colchicine
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased digoxin levels.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect.
Statins (e.g., Simvastatin)
Increased risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20-25°C), away from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and hearing loss (reversible). Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted into breast milk, but generally considered compatible with breastfeeding.
