Description
Overview of the medicine
Etopride is a prokinetic agent used to treat gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, early satiety, epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting caused by impaired motility, particularly in functional dyspepsia and chronic gastritis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 50 mg three times daily before meals.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution should be exercised due to potential age-related physiological changes. Initiate with lower doses if necessary.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dose reduction may be considered based on the severity of renal impairment and clinical response.
How to Take
Take orally, generally 30 minutes before meals.
Mechanism of Action
Etopride increases acetylcholine concentration by antagonizing dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity. This enhanced acetylcholine stimulates gastrointestinal smooth muscle, thereby accelerating gastric emptying and improving overall GI motility.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
The therapeutic effect typically begins within 30 minutes to 1 hour after administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine, primarily as metabolites.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 6 to 8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are usually reached within 30 to 60 minutes after oral administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by N-oxidation, to inactive metabolites. It is not metabolized by CYP450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Etopride or any components of the formulation.
- Patients with gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Although not extensively studied, co-administration with Warfarin requires careful monitoring of INR.
Anticholinergic drugs
Anticholinergic drugs may reduce the prokinetic effect of Etopride. Avoid concomitant use.
Gastric acid suppressants
May alter Etopride absorption, but generally not clinically significant.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Etopride should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Etopride is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have demonstrated Etopride's efficacy in improving gastric emptying and relieving symptoms of functional dyspepsia, showing a good safety profile.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is generally not required. In rare instances, if blood dyscrasias or liver dysfunction are suspected, complete blood count and liver function tests may be considered.
Doctor Notes
- Etopride is effective for upper GI motility disorders. Always rule out organic causes of dyspepsia before initiating treatment.
- Monitor patients for any extrapyramidal symptoms, although rare, given its D2 antagonistic action.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Etopride 30 minutes before meals for best results.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose without consulting your doctor.
- If you experience severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Etopride may cause dizziness or headache in some individuals. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid foods that trigger your dyspepsia symptoms, such as fatty or spicy foods.
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones.
- Try to manage stress, as it can worsen digestive symptoms.
