Description
Overview of the medicine
Eusef DS contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, ear, nose, and throat.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults, the usual recommended dose is 400 mg daily given either as a single dose or in two divided doses. For Cefixime DS suspension (200 mg/5 ml), this would typically be 10 ml once daily or 5 ml every 12 hours. Duration depends on the infection.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 ml/min, dose should be 300 mg daily. For creatinine clearance <20 ml/min, dose should be 200 mg daily.
How to Take
Eusef DS oral suspension can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Some excretion in bile/feces.
Half life
Average 3-4 hours
Absorption
About 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays and decreases absorption but overall absorption is not significantly affected.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the liver; main metabolites not identified.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, increasing risk of bleeding.
Nifedipine
Increased bioavailability of cefixime.
Probenecid
Increases cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels when co-administered with cefixime.
Storage
Store the dry powder at room temperature (below 30°C) away from moisture and light. After reconstitution, store at room temperature or refrigerate as directed.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is excreted in human milk in small concentrations; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
