Description
Overview of the medicine
evit-c 250 mg Chewable Tablet contains Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), a vital water-soluble vitamin essential for various bodily functions, including immune system support, collagen formation, and antioxidant protection. It is used to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose for deficiency: 250-500 mg daily. For prevention: 50-200 mg daily. Max: 4 g/day.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with high doses in those with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Generally safe at recommended doses, but high doses (over 1 g/day) should be avoided in severe renal impairment due to risk of oxalate stones.
How to Take
Chew the tablet completely before swallowing. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid is a potent reducing and antioxidant agent. It is involved in collagen formation, tissue repair, enzyme reactions, and maintaining immune function. It also aids in iron absorption.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Not applicable for vitamin supplementation; therapeutic effects are gradual.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine; metabolites also excreted renally.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days at recommended intake; shorter in deficiency.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absorption may be dose-dependent.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive metabolites, primarily in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- •Patients with hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones (especially with high doses)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Large doses of vitamin C may interfere with the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, though clinically significant interactions are rare.
Deferoxamine
High doses of vitamin C can enhance iron toxicity, particularly in patients with hemochromatosis or iron overload.
Acidifying agents
May decrease absorption of certain acidic drugs.
Oral Contraceptives
May increase estrogen levels when taken concurrently with high doses of vitamin C.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are rare due to water solubility and renal excretion, but may include gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps). Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and essential during pregnancy and lactation at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be used with caution and under medical supervision.
