Overview of the medicine
Exicof 14 mg syrup contains Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, an antitussive used to temporarily relieve cough caused by the common cold, flu, or other inhaled irritants.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 mg every 4-6 hours, or 30 mg every 6-8 hours. Maximum 120 mg/24 hours. (Approx. 5-10 mL every 4-6 hours or 15 mL every 6-8 hours for 14mg/5mL syrup)
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; caution with comorbidities and reduced hepatic/renal function. Start at lower end of dosing range.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be required based on clinical response.
How to Take
For oral use. Measure with a dosing spoon or cup. Can be taken with or without food. Do not dilute unless instructed by a healthcare professional.
Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan acts centrally on the cough center in the medulla oblongata to elevate the cough threshold, thereby suppressing cough.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Dextromethorphan or any component of the syrup
- •Concurrent use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping MAOI therapy
Drug Interactions
Alcohol and other CNS Depressants
Increased CNS depression, drowsiness, sedation.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Risk of serotonin syndrome, hypertensive crisis. Avoid concurrent use.
CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Quinidine)
May increase Dextromethorphan plasma levels and enhance its effects/side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, nystagmus, ataxia, respiratory depression, and rarely, excitation or psychosis. Treatment is supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal in recent ingestions, and naloxone for severe CNS/respiratory depression.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor before use during lactation, as Dextromethorphan is excreted in breast milk.
