Description
Overview of the medicine
A sterile, non-pyrogenic, transparent, viscoelastic solution containing sodium hyaluronate, designed to protect ocular tissues and maintain space during anterior segment ophthalmic surgeries such as cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. It aids in creating and maintaining space, pushing back the vitreous face, and protecting the endothelium and other intraocular tissues from surgical trauma.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Administer intraocularly as required by the surgeon to facilitate surgical procedures and protect ocular tissues. Typically 0.5 mL to 1.0 mL per procedure.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Administered intraocularly by a qualified ophthalmologist using a sterile syringe and cannula during ophthalmic surgical procedures. Avoid overfilling the eye.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium hyaluronate is a high molecular weight polysaccharide that acts as a viscoelastic agent. When introduced into the anterior chamber of the eye, it coats and protects intraocular tissues, provides a barrier against surgical instruments, and helps maintain the depth of the anterior chamber, facilitating surgical maneuvers. Its viscoelastic properties allow it to absorb and dissipate energy, reducing mechanical trauma to delicate ocular structures.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon instillation.
Excretion
Mainly via trabecular outflow pathway and enzymatic degradation products are absorbed and excreted systemically.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 days in the human eye, depending on molecular weight and concentration.
Absorption
Intraocularly administered; it is slowly eliminated from the anterior chamber via the trabecular meshwork and potentially by enzymatic degradation.
Metabolism
Gradual enzymatic degradation by hyaluronidases in the eye.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any component of the formulation.
- Infections in the eye (relative contraindication, should be treated first).

Storage
Store at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Bring to room temperature before use.
Overdose
Overfilling the anterior chamber may lead to transient postoperative intraocular pressure elevation. Management involves aspiration of excess viscoelastic material and/or medical management of elevated IOP.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted. It is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to minimal systemic absorption. Consult a physician.
