Description
Overview of the medicine
Eyephen 0.5% Eye Drop contains Ketorolac Tromethamine, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to relieve pain and inflammation in the eye, often following cataract surgery or for allergic conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 drop into the affected eye(s) four times a day, starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for up to 2 weeks.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ocular use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill one drop into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Ketorolac inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing inflammation, pain, and swelling in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of pain relief usually occurs within 1 hour, with full anti-inflammatory effect developing over several days.
Excretion
Mainly renal (systemic), but minimal systemic exposure from eye drops leads to negligible excretion via this route.
Half life
Systemic elimination half-life is approximately 5-7 hours, but local ocular half-life is shorter due to rapid turnover.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption; primarily acts topically on the ocular surface.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic (systemic), but negligible for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic exposure.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ketorolac tromethamine or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with known hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs (may lead to cross-sensitivity).
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If more than one topical ophthalmic medication is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart to avoid washout effects.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from ophthalmic application is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice. Management is generally supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
