Description
Overview of the medicine
Tamsulosin is an alpha-adrenergic blocker used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It relaxes muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
0.4 mg orally once daily, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day. May be increased to 0.8 mg once daily after 2-4 weeks if needed.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for mild to moderate impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral, once daily, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, chew, or open.
Mechanism of Action
Tamsulosin selectively blocks alpha-1A and alpha-1D adrenergic receptors located in the prostate, prostatic capsule, bladder neck, and prostatic urethra. This blockade causes relaxation of the smooth muscles in these tissues, reducing bladder outflow obstruction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
4-8 hours for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Primarily in urine (76%) and feces (21%).
Half life
Approximately 9-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, bioavailability is nearly 100%.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP3A4 and CYP2D6.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin or any component of the formulation.
- •History of orthostatic hypotension.
- •Severe hepatic impairment.
