Description
Overview of the medicine
Ezykof-Plus 100 mg Syrup is indicated for the relief of productive cough and respiratory congestion associated with various broncho-pulmonary disorders. It combines a mucolytic agent (Ambroxol) with an expectorant (Guaifenesin) to help thin mucus and facilitate its clearance from the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 to 3 times daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, with caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary based on renal/hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Dose intervals should be extended or dosage reduced in severe renal impairment. Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides, thereby liquefying and reducing the viscosity of sputum. Guaifenesin works as an expectorant by increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, thereby facilitating the removal of phlegm.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Ambroxol: Onset of action within 30 minutes. Guaifenesin: Onset within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Ambroxol and its metabolites are primarily excreted renally. Guaifenesin and its metabolites are also excreted renally.
Half life
Ambroxol: Terminal half-life 7-12 hours. Guaifenesin: Half-life approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Both Ambroxol and Guaifenesin are well absorbed orally. Ambroxol has an absolute bioavailability of about 70-80%. Guaifenesin is rapidly absorbed.
Metabolism
Ambroxol undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Guaifenesin is rapidly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol, Guaifenesin, or any other component of the syrup.
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment (use with caution and dose adjustment).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives
Concomitant use with antitussives (cough suppressants) is not recommended as it may impede the expectoration of liquefied mucus.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of certain antibiotics (like amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin) into bronchial secretions.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Induce emesis or perform gastric lavage if overdose is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use with caution during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. It is advisable to consult a doctor before use during lactation, as components may pass into breast milk.
