Description
Overview of the medicine
Famogen (Famotidine) is an H2-receptor antagonist that reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. It is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines, and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Duodenal ulcer: 40 mg once daily at bedtime or 20 mg twice daily for 4-8 weeks. GERD: 20-40 mg twice daily for up to 12 weeks.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required in elderly patients with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction (e.g., 20 mg once daily) or increased dosing interval if creatinine clearance < 50 mL/min.
How to Take
Oral tablets can be taken with or without food. IV injection is administered slowly over 15-30 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Famotidine competitively inhibits histamine at the H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells, leading to a reduction in gastric acid secretion, both basal and stimulated.

Drug Interactions
Aspirin/NSAIDs
Famotidine may reduce their irritant effect on gastric mucosa.
Cefpodoxime/Cefuroxime

Reduced absorption due to increased gastric pH.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include hypotension, tachycardia, vomiting, abdominal pain, and collapse. Management is symptomatic and supportive; gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised.
