Description
Overview of the medicine
Fd-120 is an antihistamine containing Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itchy throat. It is also used to treat chronic urticaria (hives) in adults and children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
120 mg or 180 mg once daily orally.
Elderly
No dose adjustment generally required, but caution in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose of 60 mg once daily. Adjust based on kidney function.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Do not take with fruit juices as it may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing histamine from binding to these receptors and reducing allergic symptoms. Unlike older antihistamines, it causes less drowsiness because it does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (12%)
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism, primarily via CYP3A4 pathway (minor)
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any excipients
- Children under 6 years for allergic rhinitis and under 6 months for urticaria (general guidance, actual age may vary by formulation/country)
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin/Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma levels.
Aluminum and Magnesium containing antacids
May decrease fexofenadine absorption if taken concurrently. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered.
