Description
Overview of the medicine
Fenaton 500 mg Tablet is a medication primarily used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. It is believed to work by inhibiting the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain that are responsible for pain and fever.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets (500-1000 mg) every 4-6 hours as needed, not exceeding 4000 mg (8 tablets) in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually necessary, but caution is advised in patients with compromised renal or hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage interval may need to be extended in severe renal impairment (e.g., creatinine clearance <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Fenaton 500 mg Tablet should be taken orally with water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Fenaton is thought to exert its analgesic and antipyretic effects primarily through the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system. It weakly inhibits peripheral prostaglandin synthesis, contributing to minimal anti-inflammatory action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates; less than 5% is excreted unchanged.
Half life
1.25 to 3 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations occur within 30-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via glucuronidation and sulfation, and a small amount via cytochrome P450 pathway to a toxic intermediate (NAPQI) which is rapidly detoxified by glutathione.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fenaton or any component of the formulation.
- Severe hepatic impairment or active liver disease.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Increased risk of liver damage (hepatotoxicity), especially with chronic heavy alcohol use.
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effect, increasing risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR is advised.
Cholestyramine
May reduce the absorption of Fenaton if taken within an hour of each other.
Certain anticonvulsants (e.g., Carbamazepine, Phenytoin)
May increase the risk of liver toxicity due to induction of metabolic enzymes.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C (86°F). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and delayed onset of liver damage (hepatotoxicity). Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment involves gastric lavage and administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when used at recommended doses and for short periods. However, always consult a doctor before use.
