Description
Overview of the medicine
Fenox 120 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itchy nose or throat. It is also used to treat chronic hives (urticaria).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 120 mg orally once daily. Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: 180 mg orally once daily (or 60 mg twice daily, if 180 mg is not available or suitable).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Take Fenox 120 mg Tablet orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juice (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple juice) as it may reduce the effectiveness of the medicine.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in less sedative effects compared to first-generation antihistamines.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (11%).
Half life
14.4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of total dose.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase plasma concentrations of fexofenadine, but this is generally not considered clinically significant.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium hydroxide containing)
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Take these antacids at least 2 hours apart from fexofenadine.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Consider gastric lavage and usual measures to remove unabsorbed drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
