Description
Overview of the medicine
Feona FZ is an oral iron, folic acid, and zinc supplement indicated for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia, especially during pregnancy and lactation, and in conditions associated with increased nutritional requirements.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, usually 1 tablet daily, or as directed by the physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment, as zinc excretion may be affected.
How to Take
Orally, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Ferrous Fumarate provides elemental iron, essential for hemoglobin synthesis and oxygen transport. Folic acid is vital for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and proper fetal development. Zinc is a trace element critical for immune function, wound healing, and many enzymatic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on anemia are typically observed within weeks of regular administration.
Excretion
Iron is mainly excreted via feces (unabsorbed). Folic acid and its metabolites are excreted in urine and feces. Zinc is primarily excreted in feces.
Half life
Iron's half-life is not easily defined as it's recycled. Folic acid has a half-life of several hours. Zinc also has a variable half-life depending on physiological needs.
Absorption
Iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Folic acid is absorbed mainly in the small intestine. Zinc absorption occurs throughout the small intestine.
Metabolism
Iron is largely conserved and recycled, not extensively metabolized. Folic acid is metabolized in the liver to its active forms. Zinc is primarily bound to plasma proteins.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component
- •Iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)
- •Non-iron deficiency anemias (e.g., hemolytic anemia)
- •Active peptic ulcer, regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis
Drug Interactions
Antacids & PPIs
May reduce iron absorption.
Thyroid hormones
Iron may reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Administer 4 hours apart.
Calcium supplements
May reduce iron and zinc absorption.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Iron and zinc can reduce absorption of these antibiotics. Administer several hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in severe cases, shock, metabolic acidosis, and hepatic necrosis. Management involves gastric lavage, chelating agents (e.g., deferoxamine for iron), and supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Feona FZ is commonly used and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation for preventing and treating iron and folic acid deficiencies. Consult a physician for appropriate dosage.
