Description
Overview of the medicine
Feritol 30 mg Capsule is an iron supplement used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia and to replenish the body's iron stores.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 capsule once or twice daily, or as directed by a physician. Should be taken with or after meals.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but individual assessment for underlying conditions and drug interactions may be needed.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required in severe cases, as iron accumulation can occur in chronic kidney disease.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow whole with water; do not chew, crush, or suck the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Ferrous fumarate provides elemental iron, which is essential for the formation of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other iron-containing enzymes. It helps in oxygen transport and cellular respiration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects are gradual, typically becoming evident after several weeks to months of consistent use, as hemoglobin levels slowly rise.
Excretion
Excretion is minimal. Unabsorbed iron is primarily eliminated via feces. Small amounts are lost through urine, sweat, and desquamation of skin/mucosal cells.
Half life
Elemental iron does not have a typical pharmacokinetic half-life as it is incorporated into various body processes (e.g., hemoglobin synthesis) and reused. Circulating iron has a short half-life due to rapid cellular uptake.
Absorption
Iron is primarily absorbed in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Absorption is increased in iron-deficient states and enhanced by Vitamin C. Gastric acid facilitates iron absorption.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized in the traditional sense; instead, it is incorporated into proteins (e.g., hemoglobin, myoglobin, transferrin, ferritin) or enzyme systems.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis and other iron overload syndromes.
- Non-iron deficiency anemias (e.g., hemolytic anemia, thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia).
- Known hypersensitivity to ferrous fumarate or any components of the capsule.
Drug Interactions
Methyldopa
Reduced antihypertensive effect of methyldopa.
Levothyroxine
Reduced levothyroxine absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Reduced absorption of bisphosphonates. Take iron at least 30-60 minutes after bisphosphonates.
Tetracyclines/Quinolones
Reduced absorption of both antibiotics and iron. Separate administration by at least 2-3 hours.
Antacids (e.g., calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide)
Reduced iron absorption. Take iron 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute iron overdose include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pallor, and potentially cardiovascular collapse. Severe cases can lead to metabolic acidosis, shock, and organ damage. Seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended for iron deficiency or prevention during pregnancy and lactation. Always consult a doctor before use.

Lab Monitoring
- Hemoglobin (Hb) and Hematocrit (Hct) levels (to assess anemia resolution).
- Serum ferritin levels (to monitor iron stores).
- Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) and serum iron levels.
Doctor Notes
- Inform patients that dark or black stools are a common and harmless side effect of iron supplements.
- Advise patients on appropriate timing of dose relative to meals and other medications to optimize absorption.
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure full replenishment of iron stores.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the recommended dose, especially in children, due to the risk of iron poisoning.
- Take with food if stomach upset occurs.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Feritol 30 mg Capsule is not known to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or fatigue, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in iron-containing foods (e.g., red meat, fortified cereals, spinach).
- Adequate fluid intake and fiber-rich diet can help manage constipation, a common side effect.
