Description
Overview of the medicine
Feriz-TR 150 mg Capsule contains Iron Polymaltose Complex, a non-ionic iron preparation used for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. The sustained-release formulation is designed for improved gastrointestinal tolerability and reduced dosing frequency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 capsule once daily, or as directed by the physician. Dosage may vary based on the severity of deficiency.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients, same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment mentioned for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably during or immediately after a meal to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Do not chew or crush the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Iron Polymaltose Complex provides elemental iron, which is an essential component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes. It replenishes iron stores in the body, which are vital for erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation) and oxygen transport. The polymaltose complex structure allows for controlled release and reduced interaction with food components and other drugs, leading to better absorption and fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to traditional iron salts.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hemoglobin levels start to rise within 2-3 weeks, with full effect taking several months.
Excretion
Excreted minimally, mainly via desquamation of skin/mucosal cells, hair, nails, and traces in bile.
Half life
Iron itself does not have a typical half-life like other drugs as it is primarily utilized and stored. Its turnover rate is slow.
Absorption
Absorbed primarily in the duodenum and proximal jejunum via an active transport mechanism. Iron Polymaltose Complex has a high bioavailability.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it is incorporated into proteins (hemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin) or stored.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Iron Polymaltose Complex or any excipients
- •Iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)
- •Anemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., megaloblastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia)
- •Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce iron absorption.
Levothyroxine
Iron may reduce levothyroxine absorption.
Chloramphenicol
May delay iron response.
Tetracyclines/Quinolones
Iron may decrease their absorption.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute iron overdose include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dark, tarry stools. In severe cases, it can lead to metabolic acidosis, cardiovascular collapse, and shock. Management involves immediate gastric lavage, supportive therapy, and potentially chelation therapy with deferoxamine in cases of severe intoxication.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Iron Polymaltose Complex is generally considered safe and effective for use during pregnancy and lactation for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, under medical supervision.
