Description
Overview of the medicine
Ferocom Capsule is a comprehensive dietary supplement containing essential minerals Iron and Zinc, along with Folic Acid. It is formulated to prevent and treat various nutritional deficiencies, especially iron-deficiency anemia, and to support overall health during conditions like pregnancy, lactation, and general weakness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 capsule daily, or as directed by a physician. May be increased to twice daily in severe deficiency.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is generally required, follow adult dosage or physician's advice.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment, as zinc excretion may be affected. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the capsule whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes, crucial for oxygen transport and cellular respiration. Folic acid is vital for DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell maturation, preventing megaloblastic anemia. Zinc is involved in numerous enzymatic reactions, immune function, protein synthesis, and cell growth, supporting overall metabolic processes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects, particularly for anemia, are gradual and typically observed after several weeks of consistent use.
Excretion
Iron is primarily excreted in feces (unabsorbed iron), with minimal amounts lost through sweat, urine, and sloughed cells. Folic acid is excreted in urine, largely as metabolites. Zinc is primarily excreted in feces (unabsorbed and endogenous zinc), with minor amounts in urine.
Half life
Iron has no specific half-life as it is not excreted, but incorporated into body stores. Folic acid has an elimination half-life of several hours. Zinc's half-life varies depending on its metabolic fate and body reserves.
Absorption
Ferrous Fumarate is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum; Folic acid is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, mainly from the proximal small intestine; Zinc is absorbed throughout the small intestine, with absorption varying based on dietary factors and body needs.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized but incorporated into hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzyme systems. Folic acid is rapidly metabolized in the liver to tetrahydrofolate and other active forms. Zinc is not metabolized but primarily involved in enzymatic processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component of the capsule
- •Hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis (conditions of iron overload)
- •Other anemias not due to iron or folic acid deficiency (e.g., pernicious anemia unless used with vitamin B12)
- •Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Can reduce iron and zinc absorption. Take Iron/Zinc supplements 2 hours before or after antacids.
Methotrexate
Folic acid can interfere with the antifolate action of methotrexate.
Levothyroxine
Iron can impair levothyroxine absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Phenytoin/Other Anticonvulsants
Folic acid may reduce serum levels of some anticonvulsants, potentially leading to increased seizure activity.
Tetracycline and Quinolone Antibiotics
Iron and Zinc can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dark stools. Severe iron overdose can be dangerous, especially in children, leading to metabolic acidosis, shock, and organ damage. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Management typically involves gastric lavage, supportive care, and chelating agents (e.g., deferoxamine) for severe iron toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ferocom Capsule is often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands and prevent deficiencies. It is generally considered safe and beneficial, but always consult your doctor before use.
