Description
Overview of the medicine
An iron and vitamin supplement used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia and to provide essential nutrients for overall health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (two teaspoonfuls) once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing conditions; consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Consult a physician for appropriate dosage adjustments, as iron accumulation can occur.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Use the provided measuring cup for accurate dosing. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Provides elemental iron, a crucial component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Folic acid and B vitamins support red blood cell formation and various metabolic processes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects on hemoglobin levels are gradual, typically observed after several weeks of consistent use.
Excretion
Minimal iron is excreted, mainly via feces, urine, and sweat. Excess B vitamins are primarily excreted via urine.
Half life
Iron itself is largely recycled within the body, so a typical plasma half-life is not applicable. B vitamins have variable half-lives, generally short.
Absorption
Iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum; absorption is enhanced by vitamin C. Folic acid and B vitamins are readily absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Iron is transported by transferrin, stored as ferritin and hemosiderin, and incorporated into heme. B vitamins undergo various metabolic pathways.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
- Hemosiderosis
- Known hypersensitivity to any component
- Anemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Reduced iron absorption. Take iron supplements at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Levothyroxine
Reduced levothyroxine absorption. Take iron supplements at least 4 hours apart from levothyroxine.
Tetracyclines
Reduced absorption of both iron and tetracycline. Take iron supplements at least 2-3 hours apart from tetracyclines.
Bisphosphonates
Reduced bisphosphonate absorption. Take iron supplements at least 30 minutes to 2 hours apart from bisphosphonates.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pallor, lethargy, and in severe cases, cardiovascular collapse, liver failure, and coma. Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive measures, and in severe cases, chelation therapy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended for iron and vitamin deficiencies during pregnancy and lactation. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Lab Monitoring
- Hemoglobin (Hb) levels
- Hematocrit (Hct)
- Serum ferritin (to assess iron stores)
- Red blood cell indices (MCV, MCH)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper patient education regarding administration, potential side effects (e.g., dark stools), and drug/food interactions.
- Monitor hemoglobin, ferritin, and other relevant parameters periodically, especially during prolonged treatment, to avoid iron overload.
- Counsel patients on dietary iron sources and enhancers (Vitamin C) and inhibitors (tea, coffee, dairy).
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed or directed. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental iron poisoning.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Ferroglobin is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. No specific precautions are required.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in iron (e.g., red meat, leafy green vegetables, fortified cereals).
- Consume foods rich in Vitamin C to enhance iron absorption (e.g., citrus fruits).
- Avoid taking iron supplements with tea, coffee, or dairy products as they can inhibit iron absorption.
