Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexozen 120 mg tablet contains Fexofenadine, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It is also used to treat chronic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
120 mg once daily or 60 mg twice daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria, 180 mg once daily may be used.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For severe renal impairment (CrCl < 10 mL/min), initial dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Oral. Should be taken with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juice as it may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing the effects of histamine which include vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, and itching, without causing significant drowsiness.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (approx. 80%) and urine (approx. 11%).
Half life
14.4 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the total dose is metabolized by the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
- Children under 6 years of age (for 120 mg tablet).
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin, Ketoconazole
May increase plasma concentrations of fexofenadine. No clinical significance generally noted, but caution advised.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May decrease absorption of fexofenadine. Take fexofenadine at least 2 hours before or after antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
