Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, especially those of the respiratory and urinary tracts.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years or weighing more than 50 kg: 200-400 mg once daily or in two divided doses. For suspension, dosage is based on body weight for children.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for severe renal impairment (CrCl < 20 mL/min). Usually, 25% of the standard dose.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Shake the suspension well before use. Use a measuring spoon/cup provided for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
