Description
Overview of the medicine
Flacort 6 mg Tablet contains Deflazacort, a corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It helps to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose of 6-90 mg daily, adjusted according to patient response and condition. Often 6-18 mg daily for maintenance.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but use with caution due to potential for increased side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Orally, usually once daily, preferably in the morning with food to reduce gastric irritation.
Mechanism of Action
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid that binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm, forming a complex that translocates to the nucleus. This complex modulates gene expression, leading to anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by decreasing the production of inflammatory mediators and suppressing immune cell activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects typically seen within hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys (approximately 70% in urine) and some in feces.
Half life
Plasma half-life of active metabolite (21-desacetyl deflazacort) is 1.1-1.9 hours. Biological half-life is longer.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Bioavailability is about 70%.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized in the liver to its active metabolite, 21-desacetyl deflazacort.
