Description
Overview of the medicine
Flumetanol-1-002 Ear Drop contains flumetanol, a potent corticosteroid, used to reduce inflammation, itching, and discomfort associated with certain ear conditions like otitis externa and ear eczema.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply 2-4 drops into the affected ear 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No specific dose adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for topical application.
How to Take
Tilt the head to one side and instill the prescribed number of drops into the affected ear. Keep the head tilted for a few minutes to allow the drops to penetrate. Do not touch the dropper tip to the ear to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Flumetanol exerts its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by diffusing across cell membranes and binding to specific cytoplasmic receptors. This complex then enters the nucleus, binds to DNA, and modulates gene expression, leading to a reduction in inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and suppression of immune responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes to a few hours of application.
Excretion
Mostly eliminated locally; any systemically absorbed drug is likely excreted via renal or hepatic pathways.
Half life
Not precisely quantified for topical otic use, local effect persists for several hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption from topical ear application is minimal. Localized action in the ear canal.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized locally in the skin and ear tissues; minimal systemic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to flumetanol or any component of the formulation.
- •Untreated viral, fungal, or tuberculous infections of the ear.
- •Perforated eardrum, as corticosteroids may delay healing and increase the risk of ototoxicity.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Corticosteroids
Although systemic absorption is minimal, concurrent use with systemic corticosteroids may theoretically increase the risk of systemic corticosteroid side effects, especially with prolonged use or application to large areas of compromised skin.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical application is unlikely to cause systemic effects. Local irritation, redness, or dryness may occur with excessive use. Treatment is symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and advised by a physician. Minimal systemic absorption is expected, but caution is advised.
