Description
Overview of the medicine
Flurodent-0022 Mouthwash is an anti-cavity fluoride rinse designed to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent dental caries.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Rinse with 10-15 mL undiluted mouthwash for 1 minute, once daily, preferably before bedtime. Do not swallow.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific adjustment needed as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Swish 10-15 mL around in the mouth for 1 minute, then spit out. Do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes after use.
Mechanism of Action
Fluoride incorporates into tooth enamel, forming fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid demineralization than hydroxyapatite. It also inhibits bacterial acid production and promotes remineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate local effect on tooth surface.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally if systemically absorbed; most is spit out after rinsing.
Half life
Not applicable for local application; systemic half-life of absorbed fluoride is short (hours) but mostly excreted.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through oral mucosa if not swallowed. Primarily local action.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily ionic fluoride.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fluoride or any other component.
- •Children under 6 years of age (due to risk of swallowing).
Drug Interactions
Calcium supplements
May reduce fluoride absorption if swallowed, but not relevant for topical mouthwash.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May bind fluoride if swallowed, reducing efficacy.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Acute overdose (swallowing large amounts) may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, hypocalcemia or cardiac issues. Seek medical attention immediately. Milk or calcium-containing antacids may be given to bind fluoride.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation, but consult a dentist or physician.
