Description
Overview of the medicine
Flutispray 50 mcg Nasal Spray contains fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid, used to treat and prevent symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. May be reduced to 1 spray in each nostril once daily for maintenance.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment typically required, but use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For intranasal use only. Shake well before use. Prime the pump before first use or after 7 days of non-use. Spray into each nostril while blocking the other, sniffing gently.
Mechanism of Action
Fluticasone propionate is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory activity. It acts by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators (e.g., histamine, prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and reducing the migration of inflammatory cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief may begin within 12 hours, but full effect may take several days (3-4 days).
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the feces, with a small portion excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 7.8 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (<2%) following intranasal administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP3A4 to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any excipients
- •Untreated localized infection involving the nasal mucosa
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May significantly increase systemic fluticasone propionate exposure, leading to Cushing's syndrome and adrenal suppression. Concomitant use is not recommended.
Ketoconazole
May increase fluticasone propionate levels, use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. Chronic high doses may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects. Management is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
