Description
Overview of the medicine
Frabex 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections, 500 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily. Duration depends on the infection type and severity, typically 7-14 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required based solely on age, but renal function should be assessed, and dose adjusted accordingly.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance (CrCl) < 30 mL/min, the dose should be reduced (e.g., 250 mg once daily) or dosing interval extended. Consult prescribing information for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Frabex 500 mg Tablet should be taken orally, with or without food. It should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed or chewed.
Mechanism of Action
Frabex inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with a small portion excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-10 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Frabex or other quinolones
- History of tendon disorders related to quinolone administration
- Children and adolescents (under 18 years) due to risk of arthropathy
- Pregnancy and lactation
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Concomitant use with NSAIDs may increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures.
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing bleeding risk. Monitor INR closely.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline plasma concentrations, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Antacids (containing aluminum, magnesium) and Iron/Zinc supplements
May significantly reduce absorption of Frabex. Administer Frabex 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include CNS effects (confusion, tremor, convulsions) and gastrointestinal disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis are not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Frabex is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to potential risks to the fetus/infant (e.g., cartilage damage). Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk, and consult a doctor.
