Description
Overview of the medicine
Freshair 200 mg Tablet is used to treat respiratory conditions associated with excessive mucus production, such as acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma with viscous mucus, and other broncho-pulmonary diseases. It works by thinning and loosening mucus, making it easier to cough up and clear from the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 tablet (200 mg) once daily, or 100 mg twice daily, as directed by a physician. The dose can be adjusted based on response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min), the dose should be reduced (e.g., 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily) or dosing intervals extended.
How to Take
Freshair Tablet should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and maximize the effect of the medicine.
Mechanism of Action
Freshair (Ambroxol) acts as a secretolytic and secretomotor agent. It increases serous mucus secretion in the respiratory tract, reduces mucus viscosity, and stimulates mucociliary clearance, thereby facilitating the removal of phlegm and easing cough.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys (approx. 90%) as metabolites, with a small percentage excreted unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours for the parent compound.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver to various inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any other component of the formulation.
- Children under 2 years of age (for some formulations, consult physician).
- Rare hereditary conditions that may be incompatible with an excipient of the product.
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants (Antitussives)
Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the impaired cough reflex. This combination should be avoided or used with caution under medical supervision.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime)
May increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote is known. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ambroxol crosses the placental barrier. Use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, should be avoided unless clearly necessary and advised by a physician after careful risk-benefit assessment. It is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution is advised during lactation, and a physician should be consulted.

Clinical Trials
Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of Ambroxol in various respiratory conditions. Studies have shown its ability to improve mucociliary clearance, reduce mucus viscosity, and alleviate symptoms like cough and sputum production in patients with acute and chronic bronchitis, and other obstructive airway diseases.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is generally required for healthy individuals. In patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, periodic monitoring of liver and kidney function tests may be considered during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of adequate hydration to patients to enhance the mucolytic effect.
- Advise caution in patients with a history of gastric or duodenal ulcers due to potential for gastric irritation.
- Educate patients on the signs of severe allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) and instruct them to seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
- Review concomitant medications, especially cough suppressants, to avoid adverse interactions.
Patient Guidelines
- Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment.
- Drink plenty of fluids (water, juices) while taking this medicine to help thin mucus and facilitate expectoration.
- Do not use Freshair with cough suppressants, as this may lead to accumulation of mucus in the airways.
- Report any severe skin rash, itching, or swelling immediately to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Freshair is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience any side effects like dizziness, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid smoking, as it irritates the respiratory tract and increases mucus production.
- Maintain good hydration by regularly drinking water.
- Consider performing breathing exercises as advised by a physiotherapist for better lung health.
- Avoid exposure to environmental irritants like dust and pollutants.
