Description
Overview of the medicine
Freshfil Mono is an ophthalmic solution containing Latanoprost, used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Apply one drop to the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least five minutes apart. Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert 15 minutes after.
Mechanism of Action
Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2 alpha analogue that selectively increases the outflow of aqueous humor primarily through the uveoscleral pathway, thereby reducing intraocular pressure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
3-4 hours
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys (urine).
Half life
Approximately 17 minutes for the active acid form in aqueous humor; rapidly eliminated from plasma (plasma half-life approx. 17 minutes).
Absorption
Absorbed through the cornea where it is hydrolyzed to the active acid form. Peak concentration in aqueous humor occurs about 2 hours after topical administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by fatty acid beta-oxidation in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Latanoprost or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other prostaglandin analogues
Concomitant use of two or more prostaglandin analogues is not recommended due to potential for increased intraocular pressure.
Thimerosal-containing eye drops
Co-administration with eye drops containing thimerosal may cause precipitation. If such preparations are used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store unopened bottle in a refrigerator (2-8°C). After opening, store at room temperature (below 25°C) and protect from light.
Overdose
Ocular overdose may result in ocular irritation and conjunctival hyperemia. If oral overdose occurs, treatment is symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor. Lactation: Excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
