Description
Overview of the medicine
Fungirox 1% cream contains Ciclopirox, a broad-spectrum antifungal agent used to treat various fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply Fungirox 1% cream to the affected skin area and its immediate surroundings twice daily, preferably in the morning and evening. Gently massage into the skin. Continue treatment for the full prescribed duration, typically 2 to 4 weeks, even if symptoms improve earlier. For tinea pedis, continue for 1 week after clinical cure.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical use only. Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin and the surrounding area and gently rub it in. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Ciclopirox exerts its antifungal activity by chelating polyvalent cations (e.g., Fe3+, Al3+), which leads to the inhibition of essential fungal enzymes responsible for the degradation of peroxides. This disrupts various metabolic processes within the fungal cell, including respiration and synthesis of macromolecules, ultimately leading to fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic improvement often begins within a few days; complete mycological cure may take 2-4 weeks or longer depending on the infection type and severity.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily excreted renally.
Half life
The systemic half-life is not clinically relevant due to minimal absorption. If absorbed, elimination half-life is approximately 1.7 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of ciclopirox from topical application is minimal (typically <1.5% of the applied dose).
Metabolism
Absorbed ciclopirox is primarily metabolized via glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciclopirox or any of the excipients in the cream.
Drug Interactions
Topical corticosteroids
Concurrent use may theoretically reduce the antifungal efficacy, though clinical significance is generally minimal for mild infections. Avoid prolonged co-administration.
Other topical preparations
Avoid applying other topical medicines to the same area at the same time without consulting a doctor.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidental ingestion occurs, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. Contact a poison control center or seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. While systemic absorption is minimal, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and after consulting a healthcare professional. Ciclopirox is unlikely to be excreted in human milk in clinically significant amounts due to low systemic absorption, but caution is advised during breastfeeding.
