Fungistin 100,000 Unit Suspension is an antifungal medicine containing Nystatin, primarily used to treat fungal infections of the mouth and throat (oral candidiasis, also known as thrush). It works by stopping the growth of fungi.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400,000 to 600,000 units (4-6 ml of suspension) four times daily. Swish in mouth for as long as possible before swallowing.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed, same as adults.
Children_infants
100,000 units (1 ml of suspension) four times daily. For infants, half the dose in each side of the mouth.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
Hepatic_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Shake well before use. The suspension should be held in the mouth for as long as possible (several minutes) before swallowing to ensure maximum contact with the affected areas. For infants, administer half the dose into each side of the mouth.
Mechanism of Action
Nystatin is a polyene antifungal that binds to ergosterol, a major component of the fungal cell membrane. This binding creates pores in the membrane, leading to leakage of essential intracellular components and ultimately fungal cell death. It exhibits both fungistatic and fungicidal activity depending on concentration.
