Description
Overview of the medicine
Fungitac 2% Cream is an antifungal medicine used to treat various fungal infections of the skin and nails, caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and other fungi. Its active ingredient is Miconazole Nitrate.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and surrounding skin, gently rubbing it in, once or twice daily. Continue treatment for at least 2 to 4 weeks, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients; use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Clean and dry the affected skin area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a small amount of cream and gently rub it into the skin until absorbed. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole Nitrate, the active ingredient, inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased cell membrane permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately, fungal cell death. It exhibits both fungistatic and fungicidal activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief can be expected within a few days; complete cure may take 2 to 6 weeks depending on the infection type and severity.
Excretion
Metabolites are excreted in feces and urine, if systemic absorption occurs.
Half life
Not relevant for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Systemic absorption following topical application to intact skin is minimal (less than 1% of the applied dose).
Metabolism
Any systemically absorbed Miconazole is primarily metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Miconazole, other azole antifungals, or any component of the cream.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Although systemic absorption is minimal, there have been rare reports of increased anticoagulant effect when topical miconazole is co-administered with oral anticoagulants like warfarin. Monitor INR if used concurrently.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical Miconazole Nitrate is highly unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. In the event of accidental oral ingestion, gastric lavage may be considered in consultation with a medical professional, but it is generally not necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Miconazole is classified as Pregnancy Category C. It is generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation due to minimal systemic absorption, but consult your doctor before use.
