Description
Overview of the medicine
G-Antacid is a combination medicine used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and gas (flatulence). It contains antacids (aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide) to neutralize stomach acid and simethicone to break down gas bubbles.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) or 1-2 chewable tablets, 3-4 times daily, after meals and at bedtime.
Elderly
Same as adults, with caution in those with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Reduced dosage may be necessary due to risk of hypermagnesemia.
How to Take
For suspension, shake well before use. Take orally after meals and at bedtime. For chewable tablets, chew thoroughly before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium and Magnesium Hydroxides act as antacids by neutralizing hydrochloric acid in the stomach, reducing its acidity. Simethicone acts as an anti-foaming agent, reducing surface tension of gas bubbles in the GI tract, allowing them to combine and be easily expelled.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes
Excretion
Unabsorbed aluminium and magnesium are excreted via feces. Simethicone is excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable for local action; systemic half-life for absorbed ions are short.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption for aluminium and magnesium salts. Simethicone is not absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized systemically. Aluminium and magnesium ions are minimally absorbed.
