Description
Overview of the medicine
g-Calbo-DX 600 mg tablet is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, primarily used to treat and prevent calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, and to support bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet once or twice daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, or as directed by a physician, with consideration for renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor calcium levels. Dosage adjustment may be required.
How to Take
Oral administration. It can be taken with or after food for better absorption and to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for maintaining bone health, nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, playing a critical role in bone mineralization and immune function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, as it involves the restoration of calcium and vitamin D stores and metabolic processes.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces, with a smaller amount via urine. Vitamin D metabolites are excreted mainly in the bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) has a half-life of approximately 15-24 hours; its active metabolites have longer half-lives. Calcium is tightly regulated and doesn't have a typical systemic half-life like drugs.
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, with absorption efficiency depending on vitamin D status. Vitamin D3 is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and then in the kidneys to its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D]. Calcium itself is not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- •Hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Calcium can increase the risk of digitalis toxicity in patients taking digoxin.
Levothyroxine
Calcium can interfere with absorption; take calcium at a different time.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with absorption; take calcium at a different time.
Corticosteroids
May decrease calcium absorption.
Thiazide Diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, polydipsia, polyuria, mental disturbances, kidney stones). Management involves discontinuing the product, rehydration, and supportive measures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements, within recommended dosages. Excessive intake should be avoided.
