Description
Overview of the medicine
Miconazole 2% w/w cream is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat various skin infections caused by fungi, including candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area(s) usually once or twice daily. Continue treatment for 2-4 weeks, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area before applying the cream. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This leads to increased permeability of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in the leakage of essential intracellular components and ultimately cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom improvement typically begins within a few days of treatment.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in feces and urine as metabolites.
Half life
Due to minimal systemic absorption, a relevant systemic half-life is not established for topical application.
Absorption
Systemic absorption after topical application is minimal (less than 1%) and generally not detectable in plasma.
Metabolism
Any small absorbed amount is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to miconazole or any of its excipients.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Although systemic absorption is minimal, there have been rare reports of increased anticoagulant effects (e.g., bleeding) when topical miconazole is used concurrently with oral anticoagulants like warfarin. Monitor INR if used together.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Accidental oral ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention for symptomatic treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Consult a doctor before use.
