Description
Overview of the medicine
Gastid (Orange Flavor) 480 mg Suspension is an antacid medication used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and sour stomach. It contains Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide, which work by neutralizing stomach acid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, preferably between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to risk of aluminum and magnesium accumulation. Dose reduction may be necessary.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Take orally. For best results, take between meals and at bedtime. Do not take with other medications that require stomach acid for absorption, wait at least 2 hours.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are inorganic salts that act as antacids. They react with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form water and other compounds, thereby raising the pH of gastric contents and reducing acidity. Magnesium hydroxide also has a mild laxative effect, while aluminium hydroxide can cause constipation, balancing the overall bowel effect.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-10 minutes.
Excretion
Unabsorbed portions excreted in feces. Small absorbed amounts of magnesium and aluminum are renally excreted.
Half life
Not applicable for local acting antacids; systemic half-life for absorbed ions is short (minutes to hours).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption; acts primarily in the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the conventional sense; reacts chemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or any component of the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment (risk of hypermagnesemia and aluminum toxicity).
- Hypophosphatemia.
Drug Interactions
Thyroid hormones
Reduced absorption of thyroid hormones. Administer several hours apart.
Iron salts & Digoxin
Reduced absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Mycophenolate Mofetil
Reduced absorption. Avoid concomitant use.
Ketoconazole & Itraconazole
Reduced absorption due to increased gastric pH. Avoid concomitant use.
Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate
Increased risk of intestinal obstruction or necrosis, especially with aluminum-containing antacids.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Reduced absorption of antibiotics due to chelation. Separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. In severe cases or with renal impairment, hypermagnesemia or aluminum toxicity may occur. Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive measures. Dialysis may be required in severe cases of hypermagnesemia or aluminum toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but prolonged high-dose use should be avoided. Consult a doctor before use.
