Description
Overview of the medicine
Gatifloxacin 0.3% eye drop is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times a day on Day 1. On Day 2-7, instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 2-4 times a day while awake.
Elderly
Same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull lower eyelid down to form a pouch. Squeeze a drop into the pouch. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface. Close eye gently for 1-2 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Gatifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.

Onset
Rapid, usually within hours of initial dose.
Excretion
Primarily renal for systemically absorbed drug, but very little is systemically absorbed.
Half life
Systemic half-life is around 7-14 hours, but local ocular half-life is not well characterized but drug remains in ocular tissues for sufficient time.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ocular administration. Primarily acts locally.

Minimal systemic metabolism for ophthalmic use.

- Hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the medication.
